This guide is general product research, not a substitute for a car seat inspection. Follow each seat’s manual and your vehicle owner’s manual, and have a three-seat row checked by a certified technician.

Shopping for SUVs that fit 3 car seats across usually starts with a brochure and ends with a tape measure, and the two rarely agree. We pulled second-row hip room for eight popular SUVs straight from each automaker’s US spec page and set it against the narrowest car seats we’ve verified. The result is a clear split: a handful of three-row SUVs with real room on paper, a middle group where seat choice matters, and compact crossovers where the math gets thin or fails.
Short answer: Among the SUVs we checked, the Honda Pilot lists the most second-row hip room at 57.4 inches, followed closely by the Toyota Grand Highlander, Hyundai Palisade, and Kia Telluride. Three slim car seats total 50.1 to 51.0 inches, so those four leave roughly 5.5 to 7.3 inches on paper. The Toyota RAV4 lists 49.6 inches and doesn’t add up.
Researched: second-row hip room comes from each automaker’s US specifications page for the model year shown, checked in October 2026, and car seat widths come from the manufacturers’ product pages. We didn’t install seats in these vehicles, and several brands’ pages (Subaru, Chevrolet) didn’t load or didn’t list hip room, so we left them out rather than use third-party figures.
| SUV (model year) | 2nd-row hip room | Room left after three slim seats* | Our read |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Honda Pilot (2026) | 57.4 in | 6.4 to 7.3 in | Most margin on paper |
| 2. Toyota Grand Highlander (2026) | 57.0 in | 6.0 to 6.9 in | Strong, if you have the bench |
| 3. Hyundai Palisade (2027) | 56.7 in | 5.7 to 6.6 in | Strong candidate |
| 4. Kia Telluride (2027) | 56.5 in | 5.5 to 6.4 in | Strong candidate |
| 5. Kia Sorento (2026) | 55.1 in | 4.1 to 5.0 in | Workable with slim seats |
| 6. Hyundai Santa Fe (2027) | 54.9 in | 3.9 to 4.8 in | Workable with slim seats |
| 7. Honda CR-V (2027) | 52.6 in | 1.6 to 2.5 in | Tight |
| 8. Toyota RAV4 (2026) | 49.6 in | −1.4 to −0.5 in | Doesn’t add up |

SUVs That Fit 3 Car Seats Across: The Width Math
Hip room is the automaker’s measurement of the seat’s width at hip level. It’s a cabin figure, not the flat part of the cushion where a car seat base sits, so it reads more generously than what you can use. It’s still the one width every automaker below publishes the same way, which makes it the fairest first screen for SUVs that fit 3 car seats across.
On the car seat side, we used the narrowest widths manufacturers list among slim seats: 16.7 inches for the Graco SlimFit3 LX and Chicco Fit3x, and 17 inches for the Britax Poplar. Our narrowest car seats ranking covers the full list. Three of them total 50.1 to 51.0 inches, and the table subtracts that from each SUV’s listed hip room. The arithmetic is ours.
| SUV | 2nd-row hip room (listed) | Minus 50.1 in (three 16.7-in seats) | Minus 51.0 in (three 17-in seats) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda Pilot | 57.4 in | 7.3 in | 6.4 in |
| Toyota Grand Highlander | 57.0 in | 6.9 in | 6.0 in |
| Hyundai Palisade | 56.7 in | 6.6 in | 5.7 in |
| Kia Telluride | 56.5 in | 6.4 in | 5.5 in |
| Kia Sorento | 55.1 in | 5.0 in | 4.1 in |
| Hyundai Santa Fe | 54.9 in | 4.8 in | 3.9 in |
| Honda CR-V | 52.6 in | 2.5 in | 1.6 in |
| Toyota RAV4 | 49.6 in | −0.5 in | −1.4 in |
Treat the leftover inches as an upper bound. Door panels curve inward below hip level, bolsters raise the outer edges, and a seat’s widest point is often at the cupholders or shoulder wings. A figure above roughly 5 inches means “worth a test install.” A negative figure means the listed dimensions already rule it out.
Check Your Second Row Before You Trust Any Ranking
Every number above assumes your second row has three seating positions. Many three-row SUVs offer captain’s chairs on some trims, and a row with two chairs holds two car seats no matter how much hip room the spec page lists. Honda, for example, lists seating capacity of 8 on most 2026 Pilot trims and 7 on the TrailSport, and Toyota lists the same second-row hip room across the Grand Highlander trims on its page.
So confirm your exact trim’s second row on the window sticker or in the owner’s manual first. Then read the manual’s section on which seating positions can take a car seat and which have lower anchors. Our 3 car seats across guide walks through both.
Roomiest Second Rows: 56 Inches and Up
Four three-row SUVs list 56 inches or more of second-row hip room. They’re the most realistic starting points if you want SUVs that fit 3 car seats across without a vehicle swap.
1. Honda Pilot
Honda’s 2026 Pilot specs page lists second-row hip room at 57.4 inches and second-row shoulder room at 61.7 inches, the widest hip figure we found. That leaves about 7.3 inches with three 16.7-inch seats. Our Honda Pilot 3-across guide covers the bench-versus-captain’s-chairs question in detail.
Choose the Pilot if you want the most listed second-row width of any SUV here. Skip it if your trim has captain’s chairs, since two positions can’t make three across.
2. Toyota Grand Highlander
Toyota’s 2026 Grand Highlander specifications list second-row hip room at 57 inches on all three trims shown. We cover why that number overstates usable space in our Grand Highlander 3-across guide, so we’ll keep this entry short.
Choose the Grand Highlander if you have the second-row bench and want a three-row SUV with room to spare. Skip it if you’re buying one specifically to fit three seats and haven’t confirmed your trim’s second row.
3. Hyundai Palisade
Hyundai’s 2027 Palisade specs list second-row hip room at 56.7 inches, with second-row shoulder room between 60.6 and 61.0 inches depending on the trim. Three 17-inch seats would leave about 5.7 inches on paper.
Choose the Palisade if you want a Pilot-class second row and prefer Hyundai’s lineup. Skip it if you need the very widest figure, since the Pilot lists 0.7 inch more.
4. Kia Telluride
Kia’s 2027 Telluride spec comparison lists second-row hip room at 56.5 inches and second-row shoulder room at 61.2 inches. That’s about 6.4 inches of margin with three 16.7-inch seats, nearly the same as the Palisade.
Choose the Telluride if you’re comparing it with the Palisade; the listed widths are close enough that other priorities can decide. Skip it if your trim doesn’t have a second-row bench.
The Middle Group: 55 Inches
These two are the smaller three-row SUVs. They can work with slim seats, but there’s less room to absorb a wide cupholder or a thick door armrest.
5. Kia Sorento
Kia’s 2026 Sorento spec comparison lists second-row hip room at 55.1 inches and second-row shoulder room at 58.1 inches. Kia lists the same figures across the trims shown in that comparison. Three 16.7-inch seats leave about 5.0 inches on paper.
Choose the Sorento if you want a smaller three-row SUV and plan to use the narrowest harnessed seats. Skip it if any of your three seats is wider than the slim models we’ve checked.
6. Hyundai Santa Fe
Hyundai’s 2027 Santa Fe specs list second-row hip room at 54.9 inches, within a fifth of an inch of the Sorento, and second-row shoulder room at 58.1 inches. In practice the two land in the same place.
Choose the Santa Fe if it’s already on your list for other reasons and your seats are all slim. Skip it if you’re counting on the margin the Pilot or Palisade offers.
Compact SUVs: Where the Math Gets Thin
Compact crossovers are the most common vehicles families hope will stretch. The listed numbers are the clearest answer.
7. Honda CR-V
Honda’s 2027 CR-V specs list second-row hip room at 52.6 inches and second-row shoulder room at 55.9 inches. Three 16.7-inch seats leave 2.5 inches on paper, and three 17-inch seats leave 1.6. That’s positive, but it disappears quickly once door panels and bolsters take their share.
Choose the CR-V if you need two car seats and an adult in back, with three across as a long shot. Skip it if three seats in one row is a firm requirement.
8. Toyota RAV4
Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 specifications list second-row hip room at 49.6 inches, which is already narrower than three 16.7-inch seats before any intrusion. Our RAV4 3-across guide shows the full math.
Choose the RAV4 if two car seats are all you need in back. Skip it if you’re looking for SUVs that fit 3 car seats across.
SUVs That Fit 3 Car Seats Across by Size Tier
We’ve grouped these by size rather than by price, since trim and options change prices often. Check each manufacturer’s current listing for pricing.
| Tier | SUVs | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Larger three-row | Pilot, Grand Highlander, Palisade, Telluride | Three slim seats with the most room on paper |
| Midsize three-row | Sorento, Santa Fe | Three slim seats with a thinner margin |
| Compact two-row | CR-V, RAV4 | Two car seats in back; three is a long shot |
The pattern is straightforward: the larger three-row tier is where SUVs that fit 3 car seats across live. Moving up in size adds hip room, and moving down in size removes the option.
The Third Row Won’t Help
If you’re hoping the third row can hold three seats, the listed numbers say no. Honda lists 44.6 inches of third-row hip room for the Pilot, Toyota lists 45.7 for the Grand Highlander, Hyundai lists 45.3 for the Palisade and 42.7 for the Santa Fe, and Kia lists 44.5 for the Telluride and 42.5 for the Sorento. All are shorter than the 50.1 inches three slim seats need. Use the third row for one or two seats, and expect buckle access to be harder back there.
What Hip Room Doesn’t Tell You
A listed width is a screening number. Before you buy a vehicle or three new seats for a three-across row, check what no spec sheet covers:
- Usable cushion width. Measure door panel to door panel at the height where a car seat base rests, then again at shell height.
- The center position. Your vehicle owner’s manual says whether the center seat can take a car seat and with which installation method, and which positions have lower anchors.
- Buckle access. Three seats can fit and still bury the buckles, especially for a booster the child uses every ride. Our guide to buckling car seats that sit too close together goes through the fixes.
- Your actual seats. A seat’s widest point may be at the cupholders, not the base. The only way to know is to install all three.
Sedan shoppers can use the same math: see our sedans that fit 3 car seats ranking and the sedan fit guide.
Who should skip: Anyone with captain’s chairs in the second row, anyone who plans to use standard-width seats in all three positions, and anyone who hasn’t yet measured the actual cushion width. If none of these SUVs work with your seats, a minivan with a second-row bench or a vehicle with more width is the next place to look.
How we researched this: Second-row and third-row hip room come from each automaker’s US specifications page (Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia) for the model year each page showed in October 2026. Car seat widths are the manufacturers’ listed widths for the Graco SlimFit3 LX, Chicco Fit3x, and Britax Poplar. The leftover-width figures are our arithmetic, not measured fits, and we didn’t install seats in these vehicles. We left out SUVs whose official pages didn’t load or didn’t list hip room rather than use third-party figures. Rankings follow listed second-row hip room only; they aren’t safety ratings.
Questions About Fitting Three Seats in a Three-Row SUV
Which SUV has the most second-row hip room?
Among the SUVs we checked, the Honda Pilot, at 57.4 inches as listed for the 2026 model. The Toyota Grand Highlander lists 57.0 inches, and the Hyundai Palisade lists 56.7.
Can you fit 3 car seats across in a compact SUV like the RAV4 or CR-V?
The listed numbers say the RAV4 is very unlikely (49.6 inches, narrower than three slim seats) and the CR-V is a tight long shot (52.6 inches, leaving 1.6 to 2.5 inches on paper). Measure before buying seats.
Is hip room the same as usable seat width?
No. Hip room is a standardized cabin measurement at hip level. The flat cushion where a car seat sits is usually narrower. Use hip room to screen SUVs, then measure the cushion yourself.
